Lions at work in the Waynesboro community

HEALTH INITIATIVES

Eye exams and glasses:  The Waynesboro Lions Club pays for eye examinations and glasses for needy residents of Waynesboro and the surrounding community at no cost to the resident. The Lions also partner with the Augusta Regional Free Clinic to help pay for the glasses that residents receive from the Augusta Regional Free Clinic.

Hearing tests and aids:  Lions collaborate with a local business and the UVA Hearing Foundation to provide hearing tests and hearing aids to Waynesboro residents in need.  The recipients incur no fees.  Expenses are paid by Waynesboro Lions Club.

Visual Screening in elementary schools:  Lions conduct an early detection eye screening with kindergarten students and Head Start Program participants to detect potential vision problems that could contribute to students falling behind in school.  Students with potential vision problems are referred to the school nurse for follow up.

Diabetes awareness programs:  Lions set aside a portion of our budget to provide information and educational literature on diabetes and the effects the disease can have on a person’s eyesight.

Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit:  Lions partner with other area Lions clubs to purchase, maintain, and operate a mobile screening unit that allows us to bring free hearing, vision, and glaucoma screening to the Waynesboro community.   The Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit travels to the Augusta Regional Free Clinic and public events in the area to test residents of the community.

YOUTH PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES

Boys and Girls StateLions contribute money to sponsor a local boy and/or girl to participate in this American Legion program. Participants travel to a designated Virginia city to learn about the workings of our state government and engage in mock assemblies.

Arion Award:  Lions sponsor an award for a band student at Waynesboro High School.  A deserving recipient is chosen by the Band Director and recognized in front of his peers.

Bland Music Scholarship:  Lions contribute money toward a Bland Music Scholarship for the winner of a Virginia regional music competition coordinated by the Lions.

International Youth Exchange:   Lions contribute money toward the funding of an international youth exchange trip to promote education and the understanding of different people and cultures.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Talking Book Center:  Lions contribute funding and voices to make audio books and players available to the visually impaired.

Boys and Girls Club:  Lions contribute financial support to the Waynesboro Boys and Girls Club.

Leader Dog School:  Lions contribute toward the funding of a Leader Dog School and may assist a needy person in acquiring a Leader Dog.

Lions Club International Foundation:  Lions contribute to an international relief fund that provides relief assistance to disaster victims throughout the world.

Lions of Virginia Foundation:  Lions contribute to a Virginia relief fund that provides relief assistance to disaster victims in Virginia.

Lions at play in the Waynesboro community

Waynesboro Lions have a dinner meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. In July and August, the dinner meetings are held as picnics.  A family picnic is held on the 4th Tuesday of August.  In December, Lions hold a Christmas Party for members and their ‘significant others’ at the Waynesboro Country Club.
