Wreaths Taken to Sea for 2 Special Anniversaries

On a warn sunny afternoon the wreaths and flowers were removed from the Seamen’s Memorial in Canso and transported to Whitman’s Wharf by Lions Paul Horne.

Area fishing and pleasure boats picked up wreaths at Whitman’s wharf from Lion Ray White. The boats joined the lead boat the “Melissa & Papa III” with captain Bill Bond for a boat parade. The 45 boats circled Canso harbour and left Canso Harbour and sailed to the location of the Cormorant crash 10 years ago in Chadebucto Bay. Veteran fishermen commented that this was the largest gathering of boats making a complete circle around the edges of the harbour. When all the boats arrived at the Cormorant crash site they circled around the Melissa & Papa III. Rev. David Wheeler of the United Baptist Church gave a special prayer and blessing for area fishermen and women and the Cormorant crew which was broadcast to the boats in the parade. Following the moment of silence ,wreaths were placed at sea by King Lion Janet Delorey from the Canso Lions Club, Rev. David Wheeler for area churches, Lion Ray White Memorial Chair and area boats in memory of area fishermen and women. Seamen’s Memorial Chair Lion Ray White thanked the boat owners for their participation in the 40th Annual Boat Parade and the 10th anniversary of the Cormorant crash in Chedabucto Bay. The Laying of Wreaths of Sea is a closing tribute at the end of Regatta week to the marine heritage in the Canso area.
