VANCOUVER – The Fort Vancouver Lions Club hosted representatives from two organizations working to serve the community — with the help of some very special dogs — at its Aug. 1 meeting. Two volunteers with Vancouver Guide Dog Puppy Raisers shared their experiences raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. They brought along their current pups-in-training, who charmed the audience while demonstrating the early stages of service dog socialization and obedience. The volunteers explained the commitment involved in preparing the dogs for a life of service and how each puppy’s journey helps someone with vision loss gain greater independence. Also speaking was Battle Ground Police Department Lt. Jason Perdue, who introduced the Lions Club to the department’s comfort dog, a guide dog trainee who experienced a “career change.” Now, the dog works alongside officers to provide emotional support during crisis situations and at community outreach events. The program highlighted the many ways dogs can make a difference, whether through service, companionship or comfort, and underscored the Lions Club’s ongoing commitment to supporting vision-related causes and community well-being. https://www.columbian.com/news/2025/aug/09/fort-vancouver-lions-club-hosts-guide-dog-program/ |

CURTAIN CREEK – The Fort Vancouver Lions Club marked its 70th anniversary with a celebration April 22 at the Barberton Grange in Vancouver. The event honored decades of service to the local community and highlighted the club’s ongoing commitment to its mission: “We Serve.” Founded in 1955, and sponsored by the Vancouver Lions Club, the Fort Vancouver Lions Club has been a cornerstone of community support in Clark County. Some of the group’s signature initiatives include collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids, food drives and support for youth, especially at Washington Elementary and the Washington State School for the Blind. The Lions have recently sponsored paper-shredding events, berry sales, and on June 20, are partnering with the Camas Lions Club for the second-annual charity golf tournament. MC David Rich and guest Dennis Tichenor, past director of the International Association of Lions Clubs, shared some highlights of the club’s history at the event. Rich and Tichenor presented Lion Sandy Conroy with a progressive Melvin Jones award and multiple longtime members with certificates of appreciation. https://www.columbian.com/news/2025/may/10/fort-vancouver-lions-club-celebrates-70-years-of-community-service/ |

Fort Vancouver Lions Club donates lion statue to school for the blindBy The Columbian

Central Park — The Fort Vancouver Lions Club donated a bronze lion statue to the Washington State School for the Blind on May 17. The school’s mascot is a lion, but there wasn’t a lion statue anywhere on campus prior to the donation. The statue was installed on a brick platform outside the school, and will have two plaques commemorating the donation from the Lions as part of their centennial celebration. One of the plaques will be in Braille. After the dedication, Lions led students on tours of the statue so they could get close to it and feel the new statue. https://www.columbian.com/news/2018/jun/13/fort-vancouver-lions-club-donates-lion-statue-to-school-for-the-blind/ |
