Hometown Heroes Banner Program
Shrewsbury Borough is proud to honor our Veterans through the second installation of the Hometown Heroes Banners located along Main Street! In addition, we would like to thank all Veterans and First Responders for their service to our country and community.

Donald Alwine – Donald served in the Army from 1954 – 1957. He has been a long-time resident of Shrewsbury Borough, and is a great citizen, father, grandfather, great-father, and friend. Donald is currently 91 years of age, and his family wished for him to be recognized because they are truly proud of who he is and someone that should be celebrated by the community.
Gregory Bearman - Gregory joined the Army in 2019 and is currently serving. Greg is the recipient of several service and personal awards, to include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Global War on Terror (GWOT), and GWOT- Expeditionary Medal, as well as the Army Service Overseas Medal. Gregory and his family take great pride in his service, and in particular the example he sets to today’s youth that service to our country is an honorable goal.
Richard “Buck” Buchanan - Buck served in the Army from 1968 - 2001. He retired as a Brigadier General, serving for 33 years - 28 of which were as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War Era. Buck’s service and personal awards include the Vietnam Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Flying Cross, and two Bronze Stars. Buck is also a prior Shrewsbury Borough Council President.
Wayne Buckingham – Wayne served in the Army from 1968 – 1974. He is a Purple Heart recipient, and served honorably during the Vietnam War as an infantryman. Wayne was proudly nominated by his wife, Donna.
William E. Colbert - William served in the Marine Corps from 1958 - 1963, and the Army from 1963 - 1979 during both the Vietnam and Korean War Eras. William was a true American hero, serving bravely as a long-range reconnaissance patrol member behind enemy lines, and was awarded numerous medals for his 23-and-a-half-years of service, to include the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Nelson R. Daniel, Jr. - Nelson served in the Army from 1967 - 1973, in the Vietnam War Era. He achieved the rank of Sergeant. His family is immensely proud of him and his service to our Nation.
Suzanne Dunphy – Suzanne served in the Air Force during the Cold War Era. She was the first woman to work at the 58 th CSR Avionic Inertial and Radar Navigation Systems command on Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. While stationed there Suzanne worked on the maintenance, repair and operational requirements for the F4C Phantom aircraft. Her husband, William, also an Air Force veteran, nominated her as a surprise gesture to show Shrewsbury how proud he is of his wife.
William Dunphy - William served in the Air Force from 1976 - 2001. He was deployed overseas numerous times in support of the Cold War, Gulf War, and Global War on Terror Eras. He is the recipient of numerous service and personal awards representative of his honorable service in many theaters of conflict and several wartime campaigns, humanitarian support, support to Maryland and Pennsylvania as a Guardsman, and various other personal achievement medals.
Latt Edwards - Latt served in the Army during the Vietnam Era and achieved the rank of Corporal during his time in service. He lived in Shrewsbury for 40 years, loved being a member of the community, and raised his children and grandchildren here.
Jessica Fisher – Jess served in the Navy from 2001 – 2023. She grew up in Shrewsbury, and following her time in the Navy she returned to her hometown. Jess started as an enlisted sailor, and became a Chief Warrant Officer at the halfway point of her career. With many deployments behind her, she is happy to be back to the community she enjoys.
Harry Floyd - Harry served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War Era. In addition to his military service, Harry has served Shrewsbury by co-founding and acting as the first President of the Southern York County Rotary Club. He has also invested in the community by owning and operating two small businesses.
Jeanne M. Floyd - Jeanne served in the Air Force Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War Era. Her military service was based on the gratitude and love of country and extended to her hometown of Shrewsbury through community service to the Borough, care and service to neighbors, and stewardship of the environment. Jeanne achieved the rank of First Lieutenant during her years of honorable service.
Ryan J. Gloeckner - Ryan is currently serving in the Space Force as a First Lieutenant. He is the first Penn State University graduate to commission into the Space Force. Prior to joining the military, Ryan served the community as an Eagle Scout. He is proud to serve his nation, and his family is exceptionally inspired by his hard work and dedication.
Julian Jackson - Julian served in the Marine Corps from 2001 - 2010, during the Global War on Terror Era. He achieved the rank of Lance Corporal and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon. Julian continues to serve by acting as an active member of the community.
Robert C. Ketenheim II - Bob served in the Navy during the Vietnam and Gulf War Eras. He retired at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Bob served aboard the USS SHANGRI LA (CV/CVA/CVS 38), and subsequently became the historian of this ship. Bob, a historian at heart and Shrewsbury resident since 1981, authored the book “Around Shrewsbury.” He selflessly continues to serve his community by volunteering for countless organizations.
John Kirkpatrick – John served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War Era. John served our nation honorably as a dedicated patriot. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother, also a Marine Corps veteran, and is described by his family as fiercely loyal. John loves living in Shrewsbury, and proudly flies both the American flag and the Marine Corps flag.
Albert Langis – Al served in the Air Force from 1961 – 1964 as an Airman First Class and crew chief on an F-105. Al and his wife Dawn have lived in Shrewsbury since the early 1970s, where they raised both of their children. Al is now a grandfather of six, and enjoys showing the children pictures of himself taken during his time in service.
Zachary Lidie - Zach joined the Air Force in 2008 and is currently serving. He has served both at home and abroad, earning various personal and service awards such as being the honor graduate of his Basic Military Training School, the ACE award in his technical school, the Maryland Air Guardsman of the Year 2013, and the Jim Christy award. As a cyber security specialist, he has currently attained the rank of Master Sergeant and is the embodiment of a true hometown hero.
Nathan McGreal - Nathan joined the Air Force in 2008 and moved through the ranks to Master Sergeant; in 2021 he transitioned to the Space Force. Although he is currently stationed in California, he was raised in Shrewsbury and graduated from Susquehannock High School.
J. Larry Miller - Larry served in the Army during the Cold War Era. He lived in Shrewsbury during his time in the Army, and upon discharge, he opened a tool and die company in Railroad, where he employed several veterans. He was extremely proud of his service to our nation, and his family continues to be proud of his legacy as well.
Kenneth Leroy “Jack” Miller - Jack served in the Army during World War II, in the Pacific Theater. He lived his whole life in Shrewsbury, loved the community, and was a lifelong member of the Fire Company and the fire police.
Gregory S. Myers - Greg joined the Navy in 2005 and is currently serving. A resident of Shrewsbury from birth, he has always been an active member of the community as an Eagle Scout, a member of the York County Youth Orchestra, and a member of the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company since 2001. Greg enlisted in the Navy and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer prior to accepting a commission; Greg is now a highly decorated Lieutenant Commander.
Philip A. Piermatteo, Jr. - Philip served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and Vietnam War eras. He lived in Shrewsbury Borough for over 55 years, is the past President of the Borough Library, and Borough Council. He served honorably for more than 40 years, both as an active duty service member and in the reserves, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant.
Charles Reimold – Charles served in the Navy from 1972 – 1996, achieving the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. Charles lived on Main Street in Shrewsbury until he enlisted. He was nominated by his family who are exceptionally proud of him and his honorable service to our nation.
Michael W. Ridgely - Michael served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War Era. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. Michael is a prior Shrewsbury Borough Council President.
Henry Sechrist – Henry served in the Army during the World War II era, from 1942 – 1946. While in the Army, Henry served in Patton’s 3 rd Army in the European Theatre during WWII. Additionally, he also served many years on the Troop 90 Scout Committee, on the Shrewsbury Township Zoning Hearing Board, and as the President of Constitory St. Paul UCC in Shrewsbury.
Jere Sechrist – Jere is a member of the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company, and the initial First Responder to be a part of the Hometown Heroes Banner Program for Shrewsbury. He has served SVFC since he was 19 years old and is still an active member today. In 2003 Jere earned his pin for 25 years of service.
Gregory L. Seitz - Gregory served in the Navy as a Storekeeper from 1981 - 1985 on active duty, and from 1985 - 1987 in the Navy Reserves. He achieved the rank of Petty Officer Second Class, serving during the Grenada/Beirut, Lebanon Conflict. Gregory was born and raised in Shrewsbury, graduated from Susquehannock High School, and is one of several members of his family who proudly served both our nation and the community.
Larry E. Seitz - Larry served in the Army during the Vietnam War Era. Larry is Gregory’s father, who undoubtedly instilled a strong sense of pride in service to our nation to his son and family. A light weapons infantryman, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal upon honorable discharge and was granted an early release following his tour overseas.
Clark E. Seitz - Clark served in the Army during World War II. The grandfather to Gregory Seitz, he lived in Shrewsbury for the entirety of his life, and during his time in the Army he achieved the rank of Private First Class. Clark was an airplane and engine mechanic during his time in the service, and was awarded the Army Occupation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Stephen A. Seitz - Stephen served in the Army during the Vietnam Era, from 1971 - 1975. A relative of the aforementioned Seitz service members, Stephen was a patriot whose love of country and desire to serve set another shining example for the Seitz family. During his years of service, Stephen achieved the rank of Sergeant, and was awarded various service medals and badges.
Raymond L. Simmers, Sr. (Pete) – Pete served in the Marine Corps from 1960 – 1964, and then in the Reserves until 1966. Pete is recognized as being a true family man, someone who looked out for his neighbors, and as someone who loved his community. He remains a hero to his daughter and many others, even after his passing.
Merle L. Smith - Merle served in the Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War Eras. His service spanned 25 years, and he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Army Occupation of Germany - Japan Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the European - Middle Eastern - Campaign Medal.
Warren L. Smith - Warren served in the Air Force for 28 years, from 1977 - 2005; a time frame spanning the Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and Global War on Terrorism Eras. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and is highly decorated with various service and personal achievement awards and medals.
Richard Standiford – Richard served in the Army from 1966 – 1968. Richard was a Shrewsbury resident from 1970 until his passing in 2023. While living here he was a local painting contractor. He was proudly nominated by Sharon Standiford.
Daniel A. Yancoskie - Daniel served in the Army during both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf War Eras. He achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class during his time in service. He is fondly and proudly remembered by his family.
