Meetings

WHO WE ARE:

We are men and women who live in your community and volunteer our time and efforts to humanitarian causes throughout our district, the State of Virginia and the world. By conducting service projects and raising funds, we strive to help indigent people locally and throughout the world community. The Lions' motto is "WE SERVE".

Our Association was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1917 by MELVIN JONES and a group of like-minded business men who wanted to help their surrounding communities.

In 1925 HELEN KELLER addressed the LIONS at their annual convention and challenged them to become "Knights of the Blind in the Crusade against Darkness."  Since that challenge, service to the blind and visually impaired is one of the Associations most significant activities.

The VIENNA HOST LIONS CLUB was chartered in May 1942 with 18 men as Charter Members. Membership  flucuated over the years and stands now at 36 men and women . LIONS INTERNATIONAL opened  membership to women  on July 1, 1988. VIENNA HOST LIONS CLUB over the years sponsored or co-sponsored the formation of 8 new Lions Clubs and thus was designated a "HOST" club.

The VIENNA HOST LIONS CLUB is the home Club of PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR JOSEPH R. VOLPE 2007-2008 and PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR DOUGLAS T. CROSS 2004-2005 as well as PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR JAMES SCHUMAKER 1964-1965.

WE RAISE FUNDS  BY:

  1. The CLUB sells CHRISTMAS TREES at the Walgreen’s parking lot in Vienna every year.  We usually have 2 or 3 deliveries of trees late in November.  We also sell wreaths, roping, Virginia peanuts and large coloring books. We also ask for donations to the local "Fisher House" at this time.
  2. The CLUB takes part in the Vienna Woman's Club Holiday Bazaar in November at the Vienna Community Center and sells Virginia peanuts as well as large children's coloring books.
  3. The CLUB takes part every April and October in WHITE CANE DAYS. On a Friday and Saturday we station pairs of CLUB MEMBERS at GIANT and the ABC store in Vienna or Oakton and ask the public to "HELP THE LIONS HELP THE BLIND".  There are approximately (16) 2 hour shifts and this past October we collected $1,200.00.

Lions Clubs International Purpose

  • To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.
  • To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.
  • To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.
  • To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.
  • To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.
  • To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.
  • To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.
  • To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.

Lions Clubs Code of Ethics

  • To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.
  • To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.
  • To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.
  • Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.
  • To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.
  • Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.
  • To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.
  • To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
