Upcoming programs and speakers 2018-2019

August 8, 2018:  Dr. Thomas Griffin, Lt. Colonel, Chairman of the Veteran's Transition Center Board of Directors, of Monterey County.  Dr. Griffin will make his return visit to give us information and how we can help with the annual Homeless Veterans Standdown.  This weekend event is Friday, 10 AM, September 28 to Sunday, September 30,12 noon, at Monterey County Fairgrounds, 2004 Fairgrounds Road. The event includes and provides clothing, furnishings, meals entertainment and a multitude of services for Veterans.  Including medical, dental,claims, legal, couseling, employment and military document reviews.
August 15, 2018  Janet Kramschuster, Executive Director of Diabetes Youth Familes, DYF.
August 22, 2018  Mark Buxton, US Navy veteran, will be talking about his personal experiences and indepth knowledge about submarines.  Mark attended USC in L.A. on a NROTC scholarship in the early 70's, earning an Engineering degree.  He was commissioned as an Ensign (O-1) upon graduation in the US Navy and served for 5 years as a Submarine Line Officer.  Mark is recently retired from a 39 year career with AT&T.
August 29, 2018:  Presentation by Clayton Toller,  Stanford Blood Center representative.  Also presenting is Gilbert Martinez from Be the Match for bone marrow transplants.  Recipient Sharon Childs will discuss her match.  SBC is a community blood center that connects local donors to local patients.  They are a leaders in the fields of transfusion and transplantation medicine, supplying essential blood products, testing and transplant matching services to several Bay Area hospitals.  The Los Gatos Lions host a Stanford Blood Drive every year.
September 5, 2018:  Reza Tavana, Member of Town Parks Commission, will talk about the work the commission does for local parks and trails beautification. This is the work that Gary Schloh did before.  A bench has recently been installed at the Main Street Trail Head in honor of Gary. Stanford Blood Drive at the Los Gatos Lodge, in the DeAnza Room. 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Go to the Home Page to schedule an appointment to give blood.
September 12, 2018:  Sue Guzman, Director, from Canine Companions for Independance will be speaking Special guest, canine puppy in training, "Skooby" will also be here.  Skooby's namesake, Lion Bob Skubis who is very involved with CCI, will do the introduction
September 19, 2018:  Mark Krail, Head Coach, Los Gatos High School Football.  This is the annual visit by the coach to give updates and a preview of the upcoming Wildcat schedule.   A few of the Wildcat team members will be present also.
September 26, 2018:  Juliana Furtado, One of the most celebrated mountain bike racers in the sport’s history and a three-time World Cup champion and member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.  She will speak about her understanding of the profound torment of suicide that can lurk below the surface and shares her harrowing story in hopes to offer others a path to help. Quietly, she’s spent most of her life grappling with suicide and she is speaking out now, for the first time in detail, because the recent high-profile deaths put the epidemic in the news again. Her mother and older sister both died by suicide.  She is the founder and namesake of the Juliana Bicycles brand.  Mercury News, "A Race Against Suicide".
