Membership in our Organization

MISSION STATEMENT: To empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs.

MEETINGS: The Board of Directors meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM via video conference.  The regular meeting is held at 7:00 PM on the fourth Wednesday, via video conference.

PURPOSE: Our main goal is to raise money for eye research - as Helen Keller has dubbed us her "Knights of the Blind." We also provide many services to the communities we serve.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND INVOLVEMENT: We offer three scholarship programs; have participated in the National Night Out; offer free Pancake Breakfast during the Holiday Visions in December; participate in the Salvation Army’s Dress a Live Doll program; sponsor a Little League Team; sponsor a Speech Contest and a Peace Poster Contest;  Our club offers our labor to build wheelchair ramps.  Our Club offers the use of a Vitrectomy Chair for those needing it after eye surgery.  We also collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids (See Eyeglass and Hearing Aid Collection Page).

FUNDRAISING: In the past, we have had two White Cane Days per year - Memorial Day weekend at the Town of Dennis and Harwich Landfills, and Labor Day weekend a the Patriot Square in South Dennis. We have also had a Yard Sale, a Golf Closest to the Pin Contest, an Arts and Craft Fair, a Psychic Fair, Belmont Stakes (for the Randi Cherchiglia Scholarship Fund), and participated in an Indoor Yard Sale. We also were able to hold Pennies for Sight Collections at eight different local establishments.

Because of the pandemic, this year will be  a challenge and we are working on coming up with new fundraising ideas so that we can raise enough money to continue our commitment to the community, and at the same time, stay safe.

COMMITMENT: Not everyone can participate in every activity. So we prepare a calendar for the year and, that way, members can pencil in all the events on their calendars, or key into their favorite electronic device! They will know what events are coming up and which ones they will be to help with at the time.

It may sound like an awful lot of work; and it is! However, we all enjoy what we do and have fun doing it.  We meet a lot of great people and it is very rewarding when we know we were able to help someone.
