LIONS
Purpose:
The Lions After the Bell (LATB) program provides food to school-age youth who are affected by food insecurity. The concept is to give each participating student a bag of food to take home for the weekend, with the bag being of a size that could fit in a backpack.
Schools Plus:
The Kingston Lions Club works with SchoolsPlus to coordinate and implement the program. SchoolsPlus determines the need each week by talking to staff at the local schools. This protects the students’ privacy and ensures that Lions are not aware of who is receiving food.
Procedure:
Each Monday Schools Plus inform the Lions Club of the number of bags needed for that week. On Wednesday morning a small group of dedicated Lions pack the bags to be ready for pickup the next day. On Thursdays Schools Plus arrive at the Lions Hall and picks up the bags to be distributed to the participating schools. On Fridays the students take the bags home. Also on Fridays the Lions take inventory and the Club restocks the shelves for the next week.

Funding:
The Kingston Lions Club are attempting to fund this valuable program through fund-raising activities and applying for grants. Each bag of food costs the Club about $8.00 and we distribute about 25 bags a week.

FOOD SELECTIONS
Protein: Canned Ravioli, Beefaroni, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Condensed Chicken or Beef Soup, Chilli, Stew, Beans, etc., Canned Tuna or Meat, Peanut Butter (500 ml)
Side Dish: Instant Ramen Noodles, Kraft Dinner
Crackers: Sleeve of Saltines, Sleeve of Graham Crackers, Cracker Sandwiches, Small Packet of Crackers
Cereal: Individual Serving-Size Oatmeal Packets, Individual Serving-Size Cold Cereal (200-300 mg)
Snack Cups: Diced Peaches or Mixed Fruit, Applesauce, Pudding, Jello Cups (not refrigerated)
Snack Bars: Nutri-Grain Bars, Granola Bars, Small Packet of Energy Bites
Juice: 100% Juice Boxes
